The Ancre Somme Association (ASA) Charity would like to extend its sincere thanks to everyone who supported the recent Big Breakfast fundraiser in aid of the Northern Ireland Purple Poppy Memorial.

The event took place on Saturday, April 11th, at the charity's headquarters in Brownlow Courtyard, Lurgan. It was graciously hosted by Lord Mayor Alderman Stephen Moutray and gathered supporters from across Northern Ireland.

The ASA Charity is currently working to raise £20,000 to deliver Northern Ireland’s first dedicated memorial to honour all animals that have served in conflict from the First World War through to the present day.

The memorial, which is being expertly crafted by Moneypenny's Blacksmiths, will feature life-sized representations of a horse and a dog, alongside a pigeon perched on a stone plinth. Once completed, the memorial will be permanently located within Brownlow Courtyard.

The Big Breakfast proved a great success, with over 100 attendees helping to raise almost £1,200 towards the project. The charity was delighted with the level of support shown and the strong sense of community spirit throughout the morning.

The ASA Charity would like to express its gratitude to all sponsors and supporters, including Alderman Stephen Moutray, Carla Lockhart MP, Cllr Peter Haire, and John Dumigan. Special thanks are also extended to Flute Band Church and Brownlow House for their continued help and support.

Finally, the charity would like to thank everyone who attended the event. Your support is genuinely appreciated and will help ensure that the vital role of animals in times of conflict is never forgotten.

Representatives of the Ancre Somme Association Charity (ASA) were honoured to visit the Houses of Parliament this week as guests of Carla Lockhart MP, who proudly serves as a UK Ambassador for the charity.

Attending the visit were ASA Charity Patron Lieutenant Colonel Ant Maher and ASA Charity Community Development Officer Lexi Davidson, who were warmly welcomed to Westminster by Ms Lockhart.

The visit provided an opportunity to highlight the ongoing work of the Ancre Somme Association and to discuss the charity’s commitment to remembrance, education, and community support.

During their time in Parliament, Lt Col Maher and Lexi Davidson met with parliamentary staff and guests while reflecting on the charity’s growing impact across communities.

The visit also recognised the strong partnership between ASA and Carla Lockhart MP, whose role as a UK Ambassador continues to help promote the charity’s mission both locally and nationally.

The Ancre Somme Association Charity works to preserve and promote the memory of those who served, facilitates support for veterans, families, and communities through education, remembrance initiatives, and community development programmes.

Speaking after the visit, Carla Lockhart MP said, “The Ancre Somme Association’s work continues to make a meaningful difference by ensuring that the sacrifices of the past are remembered while communities are supported today."

The visit to Parliament marks another important step in strengthening the charity’s engagement with national leaders and partners, helping to further its mission of:

Ancre Somme Association marks 50th anniversary of IRA terrorist attack at West Ham Station

On Wednesday, March 11th, 2026, the Ancre Somme Association Charity observed the 50th anniversary of the IRA terrorist attack at West Ham Underground Station, which took place on March 15th, 1976, by holding a memorial service to honour those affected by the tragedy.

The attack saw a bomb explode on a Metropolitan line train before the attacker opened fire as he fled the scene. Train driver Joseph Julius Stephen QGM was fatally shot while courageously confronting the terrorist. Nine other people were injured.

The service took place at the commemorative plaque at West Ham Station and brought together representatives to remember Joseph Stephen’s bravery and reflect on the impact of the attack fifty years on.

Lt Col Ant Maher, Patron of the Ancre Somme Association Charity, said:

“Today we gather to remember Joseph Julius Stephen, a man whose extraordinary courage in the face of terror saved lives and stands as a powerful example of selfless bravery. In the midst of violence and fear, he chose to confront the attacker in order to protect others, and in doing so paid the ultimate price.

“It is vitally important that acts of terrorism such as this are never forgotten, and that the truth of what happened is preserved. Remembrance is not only about honouring the past, but about ensuring that future generations understand the human cost of terrorism and the bravery shown by those who stood against it.

“Through the work of the Ancre Somme Association, we seek to ensure that individuals like Joseph Stephen are remembered with the respect and gratitude they deserve.”

Lexi Davidson, Community Development Officer of the Ancre Somme Association Charity and organiser of the memorial event, said:

“Marking this anniversary here at West Ham Station is an important moment of reflection. Fifty years ago, innocent people going about their daily lives were caught up in a brutal act of terrorism that left families grieving and communities deeply affected.

“Today we remember not only the life of Joseph Julius Stephen and the extraordinary bravery he displayed, but also the nine people who were injured and all those whose lives were changed by that terrible day.

“Our aim in organising this memorial is to ensure that the victims of terrorism are never forgotten and that their stories continue to be told. Remembering events such as this helps us honour the courage shown in the face of terror and ensures that the lessons of the past are not lost.”

Carla Lockhart MP, who serves as UK Ambassador for the Ancre Somme Association Charity, attended the memorial and paid tribute to those affected by the attack.

She said:

“Fifty years ago an act of IRA terrorism brought violence and tragedy to West Ham Station. What should have been an ordinary journey became a moment of devastation for innocent people going about their daily lives.

“Joseph Julius Stephen showed extraordinary courage in confronting the attacker and paid the ultimate price. His bravery remains an enduring example of selflessness and duty in the face of terror.

“It is important that we continue to remember the innocent victims of terrorism and ensure that the brutality of the IRA’s campaign is never sanitised or forgotten. I commend the Ancre Somme Association Charity for their important work in promoting remembrance and ensuring that these stories are preserved for future generations.”

Mrs Lockhart also confirmed she had recently spoken with Joseph Stephen’s widow, Janet, who gave her blessing for the anniversary commemoration and said she was with those gathered “in spirit”.

Also in attendance included family and friends of Joseph Stephen, Member of Parliament for the constituency of West Ham and Beckton, James Asser, and various councillors from Newham Council.

The Ancre Somme Association Charity would like to thank the staff of Transport for London who helped facilitate this service.

The Ancre Somme Association Charity is committed to Remember the Past, Support the Present and Educate for the Future.

We Will Remember Them

The Ancre Somme Association Charity will host a short memorial service to mark the 50th Anniversary of the West Ham Station attack, honouring the memory of those affected and paying tribute to the courage and sacrifice shown on that tragic day.

The memorial will take place on Wednesday 11 March 2026 at 10:30 hours, at the memorial plaque located within West Ham Station, East London, dedicated to the memory of Joseph Julius Stephen QGM, the train driver who lost his life while bravely confronting the attacker.

On 15 March 1976, a terrorist bombing and shooting occurred aboard a Metropolitan line train at West Ham Station. A 5 lb (2.3 kg) explosive device detonated prematurely in the front carriage, injuring seven passengers. The intended target is believed to have been Liverpool Street Station during peak rush hour, where the consequences would have been far more devastating.

Following the explosion, the attacker shot Post Office engineer Peter Chalk, seriously injuring him. Train driver Joseph Julius Stephen, demonstrating exceptional courage and selflessness, attempted to apprehend the assailant and was fatally shot. His bravery in confronting the attacker undoubtedly helped prevent further loss of life.

The attacker fled onto the street, threatening members of the public before being pursued and apprehended by Police Constable Raymond Kiff, whose swift and courageous response brought the incident to an end.

The forthcoming memorial service will provide an opportunity for reflection, remembrance, and respect. It will honour the memory of Joseph Julius Stephen QGM, recognise the suffering endured by the injured, and acknowledge the bravery of those who responded in the face of danger.

Charity Meets with UDR Benevolent Fund Representative at Brownlow Courtyard

The ASA Charity was proud to host a representative of the UDR Benevolent Fund at its headquarters in Brownlow Courtyard, Lurgan, further strengthening partnerships dedicated to supporting veterans and their families.

ASA Charity Community Development Officer, Lexi Davidson, was delighted to welcome Lisa Partridge to Brownlow Courtyard for a constructive and meaningful discussion focused on veteran welfare and community support.

Lisa’s role within the UDR Benevolent Fund is to ensure that those who served in the Ulster Defence Regiment CGC, and their families, are aware that the Fund exists and that help is available to them. Too often, veterans and their loved ones struggle quietly, unaware that practical, emotional, and financial assistance may be within reach. Raising awareness and connecting former service personnel with the support they deserve is at the heart of her work.

The visit provided an important opportunity to discuss shared aims between the UDR Benevolent Fund and the Ancre Somme Association (ASA Charity), particularly around outreach, remembrance, and veteran engagement within the local community.

The ASA Charity, headquartered at Brownlow Courtyard, is committed to education, remembrance, and support for veterans and the wider community. During the meeting, discussions included the potential to make Brownlow Courtyard’s facilities available in the near future to local men and women who served in the UDR, as well as their families.
This would provide a welcoming and accessible space for connection, information sharing, and support initiatives.

Lexi Davidson commented:

“It was a privilege to welcome Lisa to Brownlow Courtyard. The men and women of the Ulster Defence Regiment gave dedicated service, often in extremely challenging circumstances. Ensuring they and their families know that support is available is vitally important. We look forward to exploring how ASA Charity can assist by providing space and partnership opportunities locally.”

The meeting reflects ASA Charity’s ongoing commitment to working collaboratively with organisations that serve veterans, ensuring that no one who served is left without knowledge of the help available to them.

The ASA Charity’s latest delivery certainly turned a few heads as it made its journey – a striking wooden horse crafted by the fantastic team at Annaghmore Men’s Shed.

The impressive wooden structure marks the beginning of a powerful new community project designed to highlight the Northern Ireland Purple Poppy Memorial and to honour the vital role animals have played in conflict from the First World War through to the present day.

Over the coming weeks, the charity will begin the next stage of development by carefully sculpting the full body of the horse using chicken wire. This framework will allow the structure to be transformed into a meaningful memorial installation.

Speaking about the initiative, ASA Charity Community Development Officer Lexi Davidson said:

“The next stage of the project will be to engage with local schools and encourage the young people to make purple poppies which will then attach to the wooden horse. Our aim is to teach young people about the purple poppy, the role of animals and the importance of remembrance.”

The completed installation will serve as a visual reminder of the millions of horses, dogs, pigeons and other animals that served alongside military personnel — often in the most dangerous and demanding conditions.
Through this hands-on educational project, the ASA Charity continues its mission of remembrance, education and community engagement.

The ASA Charity would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Ian and all those at Annaghmore Men’s Shed whose skill, generosity and craftsmanship have helped make this project possible.

Lord Mayor Alderman Stephen Moutray will host a special Lord Mayor’s Big Breakfast in support of the Northern Ireland Purple Poppy Memorial, backing the work of the Ancre Somme Association Charity.

The fundraising event will take place on Saturday 11th April, from 9:30hrs to 12:30hrs, at Brownlow Courtyard, Lurgan, bringing together members of the community for a morning of food, fellowship, and remembrance.

The Big Breakfast aims to raise vital funds for the Northern Ireland Purple Poppy Memorial, a lasting tribute dedicated to remembering the animals that served, suffered, and died alongside British and Commonwealth forces in times of conflict. From the horses and mules of the First World War to messenger pigeons, dogs, and countless other animals who played critical roles in military operations, the Purple Poppy symbolises their courage and sacrifice.

Alderman Moutray said:

“The Purple Poppy Memorial is a powerful reminder that service and sacrifice were not limited to men and women in uniform. Animals also played a vital and often overlooked role in our shared history. I am proud to support the Ancre Somme Association Charity in this important initiative and encourage the public to come along, enjoy a hearty breakfast, and help us honour their legacy.”

The Lord Mayor’s Big Breakfast promises a welcoming atmosphere at Brownlow Courtyard — a growing community hub for heritage, remembrance, and civic events — with proceeds directly supporting the development and promotion of the Northern Ireland Purple Poppy Memorial.

Members of the public, local organisations, veterans, families, and supporters of the Armed Forces community are warmly invited to attend.

The Ancre Somme Association Charity was honoured to welcome the United States Consul General in Belfast, James Applegate, on a return visit to its headquarters at Brownlow Courtyard, Lurgan.

Mr Applegate had previously visited Brownlow Courtyard when he attended a moving commemorative event marking the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp. That event paid particular tribute to Belfast man Teddy Dixon, who served in the United States Army and was among the first Allied soldiers to enter the camp in April 1945. His story stands as a powerful reminder of the shared sacrifice and enduring bonds between the United Kingdom and the United States.

During this recent visit, ASA Charity Community Development Officer Lexi Davidson took the opportunity to discuss the forthcoming America250 commemorations, highlighting the profound contribution of people from these shores in shaping the American nation. Conversations reflected on the historic Ulster-American connection and the enduring transatlantic partnership that continues to this day.

Particular reference was made to Field Marshal Sir John Dill, a native of Lurgan, whose legacy remains deeply embedded in both British and American military history. An equestrian bronze statue in his honour stands in Section 32 of Arlington National Cemetery, dedicated on 1 November 1950 by President Harry S. Truman. The memorial recognises Dill’s pivotal role as Chief of the British Joint Staff Mission in Washington, D.C., during the Second World War and symbolises the strength of Allied cooperation.

Speaking following the visit, representatives of ASA Charity reaffirmed their commitment to promoting remembrance, education, and shared history through initiatives based at Brownlow Courtyard.

The Ancre Somme Association charity is delighted to announce that it has received a grant of £19,902 from The National Lottery Community Fund Northern Ireland to support its Brownlow Courtyard Initiative.

This generous funding will enable the charity to create a vibrant community hub at the heart of Brownlow House. The new hub will feature a communal kitchen, dedicated counselling and learning suites, and a flexible space designed to be used by a variety of local groups and organisations. The aim is to foster connection, learning, and wellbeing within the community.

"The charity is currently working on its five year strategic plan. This funding could not have come at a better time as it will help ensure that we meet the charity's aims and objectives."

In addition to the support from The National Lottery Community Fund, the charity would also like to extend its sincere thanks to the Ulster-Scots Community Network, who provided invaluable guidance throughout the application process, and to the trustees of Brownlow House for their ongoing support.

On Friday 15th August, the Ancre Somme Association Charity proudly marked the 80th Anniversary of VJ Day at our headquarters in Brownlow Courtyard. This special evening brought together friends, supporters, and members of our community to remember those who served and to celebrate the end of the Second World War.

Those in attendance included the Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon Borough Council, Alderman Stephen Moutray, Member of Parliament for Upper Bann Carla Lockhart MP, as well as various councillors and representatives from various branches of the Royal British Legion from across Northern Ireland.

Reverend Derek Kerr, the ASA Charity Honorary Padre, presented the address delivered by King George VI on August 15, 1945. Reverend Kerr, recognised for his admiration of the Royal Family, delivered the speech with precision, thereby establishing the appropriate ambiance for the remainder of the event.

The atmosphere was filled with moving and uplifting music performed by St Marks Silver Band, whose stirring melodies set a reflective and uplifting tone for the event. We were also honoured to have vocalist Lisa Williamson, whose beautiful voice added a heartfelt touch to the evening’s proceedings.

The evening's program also featured compelling poetry recitations by Levi Dowds and Reubin Stevenson. Despite the challenge of presenting before a large audience, the words from these young people effectively conveyed the essence of remembrance and appreciation, prompting reflection on the sacrifices made and the enduring hope that emerged in the aftermath of the war.

On the 15th of August 1945, people from across the United Kingdom came together to celebrate the end of the Second World War. It was only right and fitting that this event culminated with everyone present joining in a spirited performance of "Rule, Britannia!" and "Land of Hope and Glory."

The Trustees of the Ancre Somme Association Charity would like to extend their sincere thanks to everyone who supported this event. Your presence and contributions will help us continue our mission of education, remembrance, and supporting our Armed Forces charities.

We were pleased to meet yesterday with Tom, Chairman of Veterans Support NI (AAVS), to discuss expanding our partnership and developing new ways to support veterans and their families. This collaboration will make full use of our charity’s facilities at Brownlow Courtyard, helping AAVS deliver more local services.

“We have long supported AA Veterans Support and the life-changing work they do, but we knew we could do more. This partnership will allow them to open a satellite office in Lurgan, helping them reach even more veterans and families in the local area.”

“It was great to meet Lexi again yesterday to move this project forward. The new satellite office in Lurgan will strengthen our outreach across the province, offering tailored support to veterans and their families. The support we aim to provide at the satellite office will be based on individual needs, from pensions and benefits advice to counselling and support group sessions designed to combat isolation. The overall aim is underpinned by our core goal of providing easily accessible support for service personnel, veterans and their families who may need them.”

League Of Mercy Awarded To ASA Charity Chairman

On 11 Jul 25, a significant event took place at The Mansion House in the City of London, where Mark Jameson, Chairman of the Ancre Somme Association Charity, received the prestigious League of Mercy (LoM) for his exceptional voluntary service spanning several years. The award was presented by Lord Lingfield, President of the League of Mercy Foundation. This honour is a testament to his unwavering commitment and leadership within the community, especially in promoting awareness of those who served from the First World War to the present day.

Under Mark’s guidance, the Ancre Somme Association Charity has made remarkable progress in educating the public about those who served. The charity focuses on commemorating those who fought and sacrificed their lives, honouring their memories while emphasising the importance of learning from history. Through various events, such as exhibitions, memorials, and educational programs, Mark has been pivotal in ensuring that the lessons of the past are not forgotten. Moreover, the charity encourages visitors, particularly young people, to engage with this part of history, fostering a sense of respect and understanding.

Mark’s efforts extend beyond our charity; he has shown remarkable dedication in fundraising for numerous good causes. His commitment is evident as he frequently takes on physical challenges to raise funds. Whether it involves long-distance runs, cycling events, or participation in local community challenges, Mark often pushes himself to extremes for the sake of charity. This not only highlights his determination but also inspires others to contribute to meaningful causes. In recent years, fundraising efforts have become more crucial, as many charities face financial difficulties, making Mark's contributions even more significant.

The recognition Mark received today illustrates how one individual's service can impact an entire community. His leadership style promotes collaboration and encourages active involvement from all members of the charity, making it a welcoming environment for volunteers. By fostering this spirit of cooperation, Mark has created a platform where everyone’s efforts matter, and collective achievements can lead to more profound changes.

Mark Jameson’s recognition with the League of Mercy for his voluntary service is both well-deserved and inspiring. As he continues his journey of service, Mark serves as a role model for future generations, illustrating that dedication and hard work can indeed lead to a meaningful impact in society.

Carol Walker MBE delivered a presentation on the Korean War, providing attendees with an enhanced understanding of the conflict and the significant role played by the Royal Ulster Rifles. Carol's firsthand experience in Korea, gained through interactions with Korean War veterans, allowed for a highly informative and personalised presentation.

The Korean War, also known as the Forgotten War, started on the 25th June 1950. While not on the scale of the Second World War the losses were high. The United States suffered the most casualties among the Allied nations, with nearly 37,000 killed and 103,000 wounded. South Korea also experienced very high casualties, with at least half a million killed or wounded. The United Kingdom suffered over 1,000 killed and 2,600 wounded. Other Allied nations, such as Turkey, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, also sustained significant losses.

At the evening's conclusion, expressions of support were conveyed by the Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge, and Craigavon Borough Council, Alderman Stephen Moutray, and the charity's Patron, Lt Col Ant Maher. The charity's Honorary President, David Martin MBE, presented Korean War 75th Anniversary coins to Carol Walker MBE and Lord Mayor Alderman Moutray.

On behalf of the Ancre Somme Association Charity, we express our sincere appreciation to all event supporters, particularly Carol Walker MBE, for her unwavering dedication to fostering future generations' understanding of history and ensuring the enduring remembrance of those who served.

On Tuesday 29th April 2025 the Ancre Somme Association Chairty held an event to mark the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Dachau.

Established in March 1933, Dachau was the first regular concentration camp established by the Nazi government. The number of prisoners incarcerated in Dachau between 1933 and 1945 exceeded 200,000. Scholars believe that at least 40,000 prisoners died there.

Dachau was liberated by U.S. soldiers on the 29th April 1945. One of those who liberated Dachau was Belfast man Teddy Dixon.

Teddy's family emigrated to the U.S. in the early 1900s. Teddy was born in New York City in 1920. Five years later, the Dixon family returned to Belfast, and life went on as normal for Teddy until war broke out and he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944, aged 24.

During the event, held in the courtyard of Brownlow House, attendees heard from Teddy's son Johnston, and from documentary maker, Dermot Lavery, of DoubleBand Films, who documented Teddy's emotional return to Dachau on the 29th April 2005.

The charity was honoured to have U.S. Consul General James Applegate in attendance at the event. Mr Applegate spoke about the 300,000 troops who passed through Northern Ireland during World War II. He went on to say that Northern Ireland played a key role in U.S. Army training and preparation for World War II, serving as a crucial base for operations in North Africa, Southern Italy, and D-Day. He concluded by expressing gratitude to all those who contribute to preserving the history of that era.

After the event attendees had the opportunity to visit the Brownlow HQ museum. Brownlow House served as the headquarters for the XV Corps of the U.S. Army. It was also one of the first U.S. Army headquarters in the European Theatre of Operations. In addition to this role, it also became the headquarters for the United States 5th Army Corps in mid-1942.

Lt. Col. Ant Maher, Charity Patron, stated, "The events at Dachau and other Nazi concentration camps are difficult to fully grasp; however, we trust that tonight's presentation, recounted from the perspective of a local man, provided attendees with an enhanced understanding."

The Ancre Somme Association Charity would like to take this opportunity to thank Johnston Dixon, Dermot Lavery, Brian Stevenson, the reenactment group, U.S. Consul General James Applegate, and, last but not least, those from across Northern Ireland who attended the event.

Viscount Craigavon a number of times and established a tremendous relationship with him on behalf of the Ancre Somme Association. He was an astonishingly straight forward man, who knew what he wanted and was used to getting it. He shared with me that he had never made comment in the House of Lords on Northern Ireland, a fact he explained quietly over a cup of coffee, in a rather shy manner, that because he as Viscount Craigavon would be jumped upon and quoted. He also admitted to me that he had never visited Ulster and at this stage of his life he would be afraid of not understanding NI and all its social nuances and that he was sure people would expect a NI Viscount to know and understand as second nature.

Eighty lanterns were carried in the parade by local schoolchildren representing various schools. The procession culminated at Brownlow House, where the children viewed a film depicting the experiences of children during the Holocaust.

A commemorative evening of reflection was also held in the Main House, where attendees heard presentations on Auschwitz-Birkenau, with the focus being the children deported there.

ASA Charity Honorary President David Martin commenced the evening of reflection, commemorating the victims of Auschwitz-Birkenau and emphasising the charity's core objectives of education and remembrance.

As the focus for the commemoration was children ASA Charity Community Development Officer, Lexi Davidson, give a presentation on the children of Auschwitz. His presentation focused on two Auschwitz survivors sisters Eva Mozes Kor and Miriam Mozes Zeiger.

Eva and Miriam, identical twins, were deported to Auschwitz in 1944, where they endured horrific medical experimentation under Dr. Josef Mengele. Their liberation occurred on the 27th January 1945. Being identical twins Eva and Miriam were always dressed the same, by their mother. When they arrived at Auschwitz they were both wearing matching red coats. In their memory the lantern parade was led by two identical twins from Lisnadill Primary School, Sophie and Lauren Redpath, both wearing matching red coats.

The evening concluded with remarks from Member of Parliament Carla Lockhart and Deputy Lord Mayor Kyle Savage, who both underscored the importance of remembering those deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau and ensuring future generations receive Holocaust education.

On behalf of the Ancre Somme Association Charity, we extend our sincere gratitude to all who contributed to the success of this evening. Special thanks are due to Alex Kor and Raymond Meade for their generous support, to the schoolchildren who participated in the lantern procession, ASA Education Officer, Greig Savage, to the marshals who ensured the safety of all attendees, to the Brownlow House staff, Gaz Drone Photography, and to Councillor Stephen Moutray for providing refreshments for the children.

At the charity's AGM recently, AGM Mark Jameson, chairman of the Ancre Somme Association said: "As a charity we have never rested on our laurels. The committee are about to commence work on our new five-year strategic plan. This plan is important as it provides a roadmap for achieving long-term goals and objectives, while also helping to navigate through challenges and uncertainties along the way."

"One of the objectives in the plan will be the establishment of the Ancre Somme Association in England, as a registered charity. With that in mind I am delighted to announce that the person who will take the lead on this, as the first chairman of ASA England, is with us tonight."

"It really is a sign of his commitment that David, and his wife Karen, have travelled from England to be with us tonight. Some of you may already know David, but I think it is only right I give everyone and understand of who he is and why we think he is the right man to take things forward in England."

The Ancre Somme Association Charity are delighted to announce partnership working with the War Horse Memorial and the Animal Purple Poppy Fund. We share the same aims and objectives regarding the role and contribution that animals, particularly horse, donkeys, dogs and pigeons played in securing the peace - from World War One and countless other conflicts - we enjoy today.

The War Horse Memorial is the first national memorial dedicated to the millions of UK, Commonwealth and Allied horses, mules and donkeys lost during The Great War. It pays tribute to the nobility, courage, unyielding loyalty and immeasurable contribution these animals played in giving us the freedom of democracy we all enjoy today, and signifies the last time the horse would be used on a mass scale in modern warfare. The Animal Purple Poppy Fund supports today’s equine and military welfare charities.

Earlier this year, the Ancre Somme Association Charity launched the Northern Ireland Purple Poppy Memorial Fund. The Charity is currently fundraising to establish Northern Ireland's inaugural Purple Poppy Memorial, honouring all animals that served from World War I to the present.

Working in partnership with the War Horse Memorial and the Animal Purple Poppy Fund is not only beneficial for both organisation, but also for the greater good of honouring and remembering the sacrifices made by animals in times of war.

On the 4th August 1914 the United Kingdom formally declared war on Germany. This declaration was a direct consequence of Germany's refusal to withdraw its troops from neutral Belgium.

Sadly, the war resulted in the loss of approximately 880,000 British lives, representing 6% of the adult male population and a staggering 12.5% of those who served.

Today, on the 110th anniversary of this momentous event, members of the Ancre Somme Association Charity solemnly gathered at Lurgan War Memorial to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to honour the survivors who returned home forever scarred by the horrors they witnessed during the Great War.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Deputy Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Councillor Kyle Savage, and Councillor Peter Haire, who joined us for the wreath laying ceremony.

Today, Wednesday 3rd July 2024, members of the Ancre Somme Association Charity were honoured to attend the rededication service for Private Price in the CWGC Chester Farm Cemetery in Belgium.

George enlisted with the Monmouthshire Regiment on the 1st May 1916 and was later transferred to the South Wales Borderers. George was killed on the 2nd of October, 1917.

At the time he was killed, George Price was buried in a field grave. However, by the time he was recovered in the autumn of 1920 and moved to Chester Farm - anything recording his name had been lost and he was buried as an unknown soldier of the 5th Bn South Wales Borderers.

Research has now revealed the final resting place of George Montague Price, and today, his name was restored to him.

Today's service was conducted by Reverend Richard Mutter CF Chaplain to 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh.

Attendees included Colonel Nicholas Lock, late of The Royal Welsh, Steve Brown MBE, The Joint Casualty & Compassionate Centre, the British Embassy and the CWGC.

Eva Martin, aged 28, from Lisbellaw, County Fermanagh, served with the Ulster Defence Regiment. Eva was killed during a terrorist attack on the Deanery base of C Company, 6th Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment, in Clogher, County Tyrone, on the 2nd May 1974.

During the service ASA Patron, Lt Col Ant Maher spoke about Eva Martin as well as the other brave men and women who served in the Ulster Defence Regiment, some of whom were present at the memorial service.

During the service a tree was planted, and a plaque unveiled, in memory of Private Eva Martin, by the Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, Emma Little-Pengelly. Ms Little-Pengelly also laid a wreath with her party leader Gavin Robinson.

Before the service ended those in attendance were led in prayer by ASA Padre, the Reverend Derek Kerr. A pipers lament was also played by ASA Honorary Piper Mark Smyth.

The Ancre Somme Association would like to take this opportunity to thank those who attended the service. We would also like to thank the Regimental Association of the Ulster Defence Regiment CGC and the Veterans Commissioner, Danny Kinahan, for their continued support.

Having lived in Belfast for almost forty years, Mr. Haines served as the Head of the History Department (1977-2000) and Archivist (2000-present) at Campbell College. He was also the Honorary Secretary of the East Belfast Historical Society for twelve years and on the Management Committee of the Federation for Ulster Local Studies Ltd.

In his presentation to a full house at the charity's headquarters in Brownlow House, Mr. Haines focused on the life of Col. Crawford. Drawing on thorough research for his book, he provided insight into Crawford's life before and after the Larne Gunrunning of 1914. Those in attendance gained a deeper understanding of this founding father of Northern Ireland.

The Ancre Somme Association delighted with the gifts donated to the charity.

Tonight marked a special occasion for the Ancre Somme Association Charity, as they were gifted two exquisite miniature sculptures from the Empire Poppy Store's Director David Uprichard.

The renowned Scottish artist Helen Runciman crafted these sculptures, capturing vivid likenesses of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Col Frederick Crawford CBE.

At the presentation ceremony, Mark Jameson, Chairman of the Ancre Somme Association, warmly accepted the donations on behalf of the charity. He expressed sincere gratitude to Mr. Uprichard and the Empire Poppy Store for their unwavering support and generosity.

Mr. Jameson remarked that he eagerly anticipated seeing these remarkable sculptures on display in their headquarters at Brownlow House, where they would join the charity's existing collection of historical artifacts and commemorative works of art.

Helen Runciman has a meticulous eye for detail and these sculptures will provide visitors with an up-close perspective on these iconic figures. Placing them alongside other symbolic pieces will further enrich the charity's visual storytelling and educational mission.

The gifts presented tonight symbolise both the creative talent of the sculptor and the meaningful partnership between the Empire Poppy Store and the Ancre Somme Association Charity. This partnership is united by their shared belief in the importance of education and remembrance.

On Sunday 10th September 2023 the Ancre Somme Association Charity hosted a Service of Thanksgiving. Giving thanks for the life of Queen Elizabeth II.

The service, held in St Marks Church, Portadown, was attended by various dignitaries including the Vice Lord Lieutenant of County Armagh, Mr Richard Hamilton-Stubber DL, Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Alderman Margaret Tinsley, various MP's, MLA's and Councillors from across Northern Ireland as well as representatives from various community groups and organisations.

The service was conducted by the Reverend William Orr. Throughout the service there were various speakers. These included ASA Patron Lt Col Ant Maher, ASA Ambassadors Andy Allen MBE MLA, Carla Lockhart MP, Graham Dodds MBE DL, ASA Honorary President David Martin and Lord Mayor Alderman Margaret Tinsley.

Those in attendance also enjoyed three songs performed by the Northern Ireland Military Wives. A passionate tribute was also paid to Queen Elizabeth II by the Reverend Cannon Derek Kerr.

ASA Chairman, Mark Jameson, said," Our members felt it was important to give thanks for the life of Queen Elizabeth II. Her 70 years of service was a remarkable achievement. I believe today's service was a fitting tribute to our late monarch."

During the service a collection was given in aid of the Northern Ireland Purple Poppy Memorial Fund. This fund was established earlier this year by the ASA Charity. The aim of the fund is to create a memorial in Northern Ireland in memory of all the animals who served. Further information regarding the fund is available from the charities website

Field Marshal Sir Henry Hughes Wilson, 1st Baronet, GCB, DSO was one of the most senior British Army staff officers of the First World War.

On 22nd June 1922 Sir Henry Wilson was assassinated outside his house at 36 Eaton Place, London, at approximately 14:20. He was in full uniform as he was returning from unveiling the Great Eastern Railway War Memorial at Liverpool Street station at 1:00 pm. He had six wounds, two of them fatal, to the chest.
To mark the 100th Anniversary of his tragic event we are honoured to announce that the renowned Scottish artist, Helen Runciman, has been commissioned to produce an oil painting of Sir Henry Wilson.

Helen is a full-time professional artist based in Denny, Stirlingshire, Scotland. Her work ranges from small delicate watercolours to large mysterious oil paintings. Her subject matter is varied and, although now working mainly figuratively, her work encompasses landscapes, seascapes and street scenes.

Helen is well known to the Ancre Somme Association as she was previously commissioned to produce bronze busts of Rifleman William McFadzean VC, John McAleese MM and Sir James Craig.

Projects like this are only possible with the kind support of public and I would ask you to consider supporting this project. The association have produced this commemorative enamel badge with all donations being used to help fund this legacy project.
